Designing Intelligent Environments and
Balancing Operational and Embodied Energy for Tall Buildings

Wednesday, October 24th, 11:30 am-1 pm
Hideaway Kitchen at Ramada South Austin
4323 South I-35, Austin, TX 78744

Join us for lunch on the 24th and learn about the latest research from UT's Intelligent Environments Laboratory (IEL), led by Prof. Zoltán Nagy PhD and Prof. Juliana Felkner PhD from the School of Architecture.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand trade-offs between structural integrity and energy use
  • Highlight the importance of integrated design across disciplines
  • Understand adaptive algorithms for building application
  • Learn about reinforcement learning for intelligent energy management

SPEAKERS:

Zoltán Nagy is a roboticist turned building engineer, his research interests are in smart buildings and cities, renewable energy systems, control systems for zero emission building operation, machine learning and artificial intelligence for the built environment, complex fenestration systems and the influence of building occupants on energy performance.

Juliana Felkner's research and teaching addresses the societal challenges that come with increasing urbanization of the world emphasizing a holistic approach in which buildings are designed or retrofitted such that they operate with low carbon emissions and integrate into the urban fabric.
